Justin Nelson Brings JP Morgan Experience to Neurodiversity Charities

Justin Nelson spends his working hours leading a team at J.P. Morgan Private Bank, but his interest in neurodiverse talent extends well beyond his desk. The Connecticut-based managing director supports two organizations that help people on the autism spectrum move into education and employment.

Two Programs, One Goal

The first is Adelphi University’s Bridges Program, which offers support systems for high-functioning students on the spectrum. The second is Broad Futures, a charity focused on connecting neurodiverse candidates with employers. Nelson describes its approach plainly: “They work with employers to match up people who are neurodiverse.”

Broad Futures does more than make introductions. It helps employers learn about neurodiversity and then supports them as they run a program to select candidates. That education piece reflects a theme Nelson returns to often, namely that companies must rethink their habits before they can benefit from this talent pool.

The Hardest Transition

Nelson identifies the leap from school to work as the point where neurodiverse individuals struggle most. “Interviews can be hard for them, so an employer has to think differently about the hiring process,” Justin Nelson JP Morgan says. Communication difficulties can make a qualified applicant look unprepared, even when the person has exceptional creativity or computational ability.

His day job gives him a practical view of what those abilities are worth. As head of the Asset Management and Financial Principals Coverage Team at JP Morgan’s private bank, Nelson oversees a group responsible for more than $15 billion in assets. Financial services, he argues, depend on analytical thinking and close attention to detail, two areas where many neurodiverse workers excel.

The JP Morgan executive pairs his charitable work with concrete advice for employers: redesign interviews, give new hires clearly defined tasks, and collaborate with specialized groups like Broad Futures. Justin Nelson believes these steps require little investment. For a sector facing a talent shortage, he sees them as a sensible way to reach capable people who are too often passed over.
