Kelcy Warren and Ray Davis Built Energy Transfer Together
Energy Transfer’s founding in 1996 rested on a partnership between two very different personalities. Kelcy Warren and Ray C. Davis, along with investor Ben Cook, pooled the proceeds from selling the pipeline company Endevco to start a new venture with about 200 miles of East Texas natural gas pipelines.
From early on, the two founders split responsibilities in a way that played to their strengths. Davis, who would go on to buy the Texas Rangers baseball team, took the lead on business operations. Warren focused on long-term vision, picturing a network of pipelines and export terminals that could eventually stretch across the continent.
A Visionary and an Operator
Davis has spoken publicly about what set his partner apart. “Kelcy doesn’t think like other people. He sees possibilities where others don’t,” Davis said in an earlier interview. That description has followed Kelcy Warren throughout his career, as Energy Transfer grew from a small regional gas gatherer into one of the largest pipeline operators in the country.
The partnership’s early years coincided with major turmoil in the energy sector, including the collapse of Enron, which put large volumes of pipeline assets on the market unexpectedly. Warren and his partners moved to acquire many of those assets, including stakes in Aquila Inc., the TUFCO System and Transwestern Pipeline, building out the natural gas network that would become Energy Transfer’s foundation.
Decades later, the roles established at the company’s founding still echo through its structure. Kelcy Warren continues to serve as executive chairman, guiding the direction of a company that now spans crude oil, natural gas liquids and natural gas infrastructure across much of North America, a scale that would have been difficult to imagine when the partnership first formed around a modest stretch of East Texas pipe.
